A friend asked me to "do something" to her attic stairs...

...specifically the risers.  I wasn't really sure how this would turn out, but I think I like it.
Here is a before shot to show you how "boring" (her word) the stairs were.

3 Part Commission

20x16

12x16

12x16
Just finishing these 3 paintings which were all part of one commission project.
These are very site specific - for a hallway alongside the client's kitchen.  The two smaller still lifes will hang on one side of the wall in between doorways, and the larger, Sunflower painting will hang on the opposite wall.  The walls are a beautiful faux finish in rich salmon to raspberry shades, so I tried to incorporate strong visual pops of that color as well as mixing a bit of it into all my other color mixtures.
Today we go to the framer's and by the end of the week I will be hanging these on the client's wall - can't wait!

Glorious Sunshine

What could be more heavenly?
I did these 2 paintings today at the Olson Farm in Port Royal.  It was quite a drive to get there with fog most of the AM, but then the sun came out and the bees woke  up.

Ron Donahue workshop

I took a painting workshop this past weekend in Wellsboro, PA with Pittsburgh artist Ron Donahue.  Ron is a friend from the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania and he paints amazing plein air works from  the Pittsburgh area.  I have always loved his strong compositions and use of light as well as his ability to make a successful painting out of simple and often overlooked subjects.  Check out his website http://www.donoughe.com/index.html

I did 5 paintings during the workshop.  I don't feel any of them are necessarily finished pieces, but rather learning exercises.  I was trying some new things and just taking in the knowledge which  Ron so generously shared. We only had about 90 minutes to work on each exercise.   So the 2 pieces below are just studies and will remain just that - hanging in my studio to remind me of the lessons learned.

 8x10
This study of the tractor was done on the first day when it was raining and the class was pretty much confined to the Art Barn.  I chose this spot because I felt the strong values applied to the lesson Ron had just given and would be a good challenge, plus I could stay nice and dry inside the tool area of the barn. Ron helped me to keep the oranges of the tractor in shadow and to contrast the warm light inside the barn with the cool outside light.

8x10

This second study was painted in the town of Wellsboro.  The lesson that morning was on separating light and dark values, warm and cool colors, and simplifying shapes.  There was good strong sunlight that day which define the light and shadow families.  With a limited amount of time to work on this, I edited out a tree and several windows.  Ron also helped me to see and paint shapes rather than drawing details.

Overall it was a fantastic workshop.  We had great fun, explored a beautiful area of PA, and learned so so much.  It has inspired me even more to paint and to keep learning.  Thank you Ron !

Field of Lace

5x7 oil

My friend Larry invited some painting friends out to his place last evening to paint his field of Queen Ann's Lace.   I like the idea of an evening paint out - cooler temperatures and warmer sunlight.  I knew the light at 6 PM would change quickly, so I just worked on this very small panel and tried to not get too detailed.  I was hoping for some orange tones in the sky as the sun started to set, but instead the sky turned almost black with a threatening storm.  Fortunately I was able to finish my painting, pack up, and start home before the rain hit and I saw the dark cloud  following me home in my rear view mirror.

Silver Morning

painted along the river in Marysville this morning. I love the foggy atmosphere and muted colors.

36 W. Main Street

8x10 oil

I just delivered this little painting to Brath & Hughes Gallery in Mechanicsburg.  It is a painting of the building across the street and was started in May during the town's Wine Walk.

Back Yards

8x10 oil
This is fresh out of my pochade box - a study I did this morning of some buildings in Boiling Springs.  I feel that this is quite different from most of my other paintings.  For one thing, the bright sun forced me to (squint) see the shadows as simplified shapes.  I have also started using an oil primer on my boards - even over the pre-primed acrylic ones and over top of those old rejected paintings.  The oil primer is thick and fills in a lot of the canvas texture and then I can sand it to a smoother surface.  I find that rather than having to scumble the paint into the canvas to cover it, this paint sits on top and is easier to build up thicker areas.

Roses and Rollercoasters

11x14 oil

Last week I painted at the Hershey Gardens which is right up the hill from Hersheypark - beautiful places, but far from tranquil with the background noise of ratcheting roller coasters followed by screams - sort of an interesting contrast.

The summer issue of Susquehanna Life Magazine features an article on my plein air group, the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters.  (That's my French easel on the cover page!) I was interviewed for this in December 2011 so it is nice to finally see it in print!  You can pick up a copy at most local news stands.

Al Retherford's

10x20 oil
This was one of the paintings I did during the week of the Camp Hill Plein Air Festival.
I did this in two plein air sessions.
Most people driving along Market Street have noticed this flower stand along the side of the road.  It is always a burst of color in any season, with pumpkins and mums in the fall, Christmas trees and wreaths in December, bulb flowers in spring, and now in summer is filled with gorgeous hanging planters.  It beckoned to be painted.

Lotus on the Lake

20x20 oil

I posted this painting several times as I was working on it.  This is a large version of a much smaller plein air sketch I painted at Wildwood Preserve last August.  The painting went through many changes and I was constantly tweaking various sections, but I am pretty happy with how it came out.

This painting is being used to promote my upcoming show at Gallery @ Second.

It is also featured on the cover of June's "The Burg", along with a nice write up about my painting on pg. 26.  You can read that here

an unexpected paint out

I ended up with some available time at the last minute on Thursday so I was happy to join my friend Cecelia and 2 other artists in  Cecelia's neighbor's yard.  I was tempted to paint the poppies that the other 3 chose to work on, but I really liked the way the sunlight was hitting this small pond in the back of the property.

When I came home I did just a few adjustments to the lily pads - eliminating a few from the composition.  I still need to come up with a title for this and am open to suggestions.

One of the things I love about my new pochade box is that it fits so easily in my bike carriers.  I could never do this with my French easel.

Spring in Willow Park

Spring is a great time to paint in the park!

I actually started this little painting around this same time a year ago and then set it aside for a long while.  Today was the perfect time to finish it.

Marbling a fireplace surround...

This week I painted the large columns and mantle surrounding this fireplace for a client.
Below is how the fireplace looked before I started...

It was important to compliment the client's tapestry hanging and not compete with it.  I chose to create a terracotta marble for the columns to pull those colors from the tapestry and a lighter marble for the upper and lower mantle.  A black marble effect was used on the bases and tops of the columns as an accent.

Redbuds and Rocks

8x10

I had never been to Gettysburg at the height of redbud season and I was impressed at how lovely it was to look into the woods and see all this brilliant color.   I drove around the battlefield for a long time to scout locations , and by the time I settled on a spot there was only and hour and a half to paint. I quickly sketched in some basic information and colors and then did some additional work on this at home.

Socked In

 9x12

Today's paint out was at Samuel Lewis State Park.  I was so excited for the rest of my plein air group to see the expansive river view from the top of the hill.  I was looking forward to painting that vista, but we arrived to find the area dense with fog.  Visibility was only about 100 yards ahead and the "view" was under a white cloud.  Most of us decided to make the best of the unique lighting of the day and focused on the rock formations and veiled trees.  Though it was not the painting I had planned on doing, I am happy with the results.  You can never really plan on nature to give you the perfect conditions, but it usually presents something different, and often better.
